You can see all my posts about my first public photography show here.
I initially had a theme in mind for this show… but it involved taking a lot of new photos, and I didn’t have time for that. So I re-assessed, and figured since my work would be up during Matilda the Musical, I’d go for the theme of escaping into books. I have tons of photos from my travels that I’ve always wanted to display, but never knew how to tie it all together in a way that wasn’t “Look at these pictures from my vacation.”
I mean, honestly, I guess it is that. But I’m tying it up in a pretty bow with a narrative that works with the musical being performed during the run of my show.
I ordered preview prints of the photos I was considering so I could try and narrow it down. And I was able to narrow it down pretty easily, considering these photos are so near and dear to my heart, and have countless memories tied to them.
Only once I narrowed the pictures down, they told a totally different story than I was intending. It was… interesting, to say the least. I’m on the mindset that the characters you’re writing about can have a mind of their own and make sure the story won’t work out the way you planned, but I’ve never had it happen with photography!
To say I’m inspired by this twist would be an understatement… I’m excited to see how the show comes together now that I’m barreling toward the final stages and the hanging!
