Second Show: Prep

You can see all my posts about my first public photography show here.

Last year was my first photography exhibit, and I made posts about prep, finding frames, prints, hanging, promotion, a giveaway, the main event, and takedown. I started about a month before my hanging date, which means I’m still pretty on schedule this year for my second show, but it doesn’t feel like it. Last year I was lucky enough to be able to focus on photography full time, but this year I’m juggling a job on top of this creative endeavor, so I feel behind.

I’ve previously thought about the theme for my show. Last year, my photography was on display during the Circuit Playhouse’s production of Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. My photography focused on childhood and nature, accordingly. This year, my photography will be on display during Playhouse on the Square’s production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Notice a trend? Yes, Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors, and inspires me as a photographer as well as a writer. I’ve been doing an author study centered around Dahl’s short stories for adults, and his short story titles really set off my creative photography mind. I wanted to use those titles as titles of my own works.

Due to juggling a full time job on top of photography, I wasn’t able to take as many new photos as I wanted – and a lot of those new photos were customized to the story titles.

I started thinking about the song titles in Matilda, the Musical, which I was lucky enough to see back in 2016. I also thought about how Matilda is a bookworm, as am I, and how books provide an escape from real life, as well as helping you expand your views beyond your own reality to also understand what others are experiencing. And that’s when I felt a jolt, when I found the theme for this year’s show.

So here I am, going through photos and possible titles and watching my image folder grow from 4 to 88 and wondering how I’m ever going to narrow it down… Maybe a set number will be featured in my show, and those who don’t get printed will have a feature on the blog? We’ll see…
